This is definitely a book I probably would not have picked up to read had my dad not told my mom that it was pretty good. Besides the fact that I have a little more insight into my dad after reading this I mean, c'mon, it's a Christian romance I also KNOW it was exactly what I needed to read at this particular time in my life.

Color me so suprised that a non-LDS author could capture and articulate so beautifully the exact theme and message my Heavenly Father is trying to send me through other events in my life.
I now have a whole new perspective to view certain trials in and my vision is clearing up by the minute! Thanks Ms. Alexander and thanks Mom and Dad!
Two favorite lines: "The most fertile soil for love lies in heart of friend. The child could abandon the parent. But never the parent, the child.
I liked this book for a while. The plot was complicated and the characters pretty well developed. Unfortunately, the author spent so much time building up the plot she had to rush to tie up the loose ends and I ended up feeling cheated.
I don't want to know what resolved the plot in a flashback - I want to be there when it's happening!
This has been on my to read shelf for awhile and I finally read it. I had to plow through and skim some but I finished.
This is an ok story, but it bugged me. The leading lady was so rotten, she went beyond hurt woman to just mean and this guy should have left long before, but he sticks around and I thought hey this is finally getting a good story line and then bam!
Stupid ending. In one chapter all the bad guys are gone and everyone gets everything they want. So it was mostly ok but I am This has been on my to read shelf for awhile and I finally read it.
So it was mostly ok but I am not going to recommend it. Very clean with some violence and talk of the wedding night.

McKenna inherits a ranch, and a new 5yr. The plot then goes on about the life McKenna is trying to build and provide in a new place, while raising a child In my mind there is no better novel in the world than this one!
The plot then goes on about the life McKenna is trying to build and provide in a new place, while raising a child, trying to control a rebellious brother, and fight off love for Wyatt Caradon.
In the end all works out better than ever. One of the themes I'd say this book has is, "Life can be a rough, cruel road, but after you turn the corner it can turn into the greatest thing imaginable!
I have nothing bad to say about this book. I loved the style and tone of the writing. Its set in my favorite time period, the late 's, which also adds to it's glory.
I also adored the characters in this book, for example McKenna. McKenna is a very strong independent young lady, who is trying her best, but just keeps getting crap thrown at, which love, because I feel like I can really connect with her in many ways.
Some other things I loved about this book were the way events played out, and the way the characters interacted with one another.
It was very descriptive. When I read this book I hated to put it down. I wish it went on forever! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but for it to make complete sense, they should probably be a bit more of a mature reader.
I usually wouldn't say this, but, I can't wait to read this book again! Hoping for a better life for her and her younger brother, Robert, she encourages him to stay strong and put his past behind him.
But she is only met with his deep-seeded belligerence. Knowing the chip on his shoulder will not fare well in this new town, she is powerless to do anything about it.
When Marshall Caradon takes an interest in her and Robert, she fears he will find out about their past and they will once again be forced to move.
But one thing he is sure of, there is something more to her than she is letting on. When he has to rescue Robert from one run in after another, he sees the strain and responsibility McKenna feels, and in turn develops deeper feeling for her.
Wanting nothing more than to help her, their relationship grows with every trial. Though some feel this is a weak representation of her work, I would have to disagree.
I was completely swept up by the struggle that met McKenna at every turn and fell in love with the sometimes heavy-handed ministrations of Wyatt Caradon.
The colorful off-beat characters and talents Tamera adds to this story are unique, helping to keep a story set in the west fresh and enjoyable to read.
A surprisingly rich and satisfying story! Not filled with the usual shoot-em up, hair raising wild west antics that make most westerns exciting, this story centers around the real life emotional hardships that were so prevalent in life at the time.

Her plans to stay with her cousin and family until she can get on her feet are abruptly cut short when sickness and fever run rampant, leaving her with another mouth to feed and little way to make ends meet.
McKenna's struggles, her determination and perseverance in the face of the hard, unforgiving life that was the 19th century West is written with such depth and understanding that I actually shed tears right along with the heroine as she worked to keep a farm running, a brother from rashly ruining everything and the forces that be from destroying them all.
My only complaint was the weird way all the events were reconciled. All the major story lines we follow through the book, from her relationship to Marshal Wyatt, to what becomes of her home, to the climax involving her brother's fate, are ALL just explained after the fact.
We are not allowed to experience ANY of those events as they happen! It's like climbing, climbing, climbing only to be blindfolded once at the top then told what everything looks like.
A sad letdown to an otherwise 5 star book. Review by Gigi Hoffman McKenna Ashford moves to Colorado, hoping to make a new start for herself and her rebellious younger brother.
Throw in rugged U. Simply wonderful. I love historical romances with sassy heroines, and this book did not disappoint.
The main character, McKenna Ashford, grabbed my attention right away. I was pulled into the story through the struggles, surprises, and genuine love.
It leaves you feeling warm, fuzzy, and happy. Really great! TA did a good job, I love all her books and this one is definitely very close to my heart.
The trouble the heroine experienced with her brother's decadent behavior gambling, fighting, bad work ethic, no sense of responsibility was portrayed in a very realistic way.
I identified with the heroine's struggles to play multiple r Really great! The characters were very well developed and the romance between the 2 main characters was very touching.
The hero was very macho but in a nice sweet way. TA is very talented, it's rare for me to find an author where I like all books written by the author and TA is one of them.
I added this book to my reading list when it was recommended reading when I finished My Antonia by Willa Cather.
I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the trials they had to overcome. It wasn't over the top or cheesy, like some christian fiction.
It was very well written, well through out, and still had a happy ending. I love the small twists and turns, and the ending was not too surprising, but not too predictable either.
I'll read more books by this author. Western romance is not my cup of tea. It does not read like historical fiction to me.
There's a lot going on in the book, many obstacles to overcome which are worked out through the pages of a book which I would highly recommend to young adult readers and teens.
The writing is clean. There is an element of faith, which is not as central to the story as I like. Sweet story to get lost in!
Just your typical Tamera Alexander western! I was surprised by how much I liked this, since I've been kind of "meh" about other books I've read recently by Alexander apart from her settings; as I've said before, she really shines there most of the time.
There were a couple errors calling Chin Mei just Mei, for example; maybe it's different for different parts of China, but my understanding is that you have to be really, really close friends to drop the surname, especially if the given name is only one syllable , but they were tiny and I was surprised by how much I liked this, since I've been kind of "meh" about other books I've read recently by Alexander apart from her settings; as I've said before, she really shines there most of the time.
There were a couple errors calling Chin Mei just Mei, for example; maybe it's different for different parts of China, but my understanding is that you have to be really, really close friends to drop the surname, especially if the given name is only one syllable , but they were tiny and unimportant overall.
I enjoyed Mckenna's character, her struggles, her growth, and how hard things were for her. I also enjoyed Wyatt and his story, particularly for how he was able to be a support to both Mckenna and Robert though much more subtly with Robert during their trials.
I read this book because it was on the shelf at the library, and I am reading all the books on that shelf at the library, as a reading challenge.
I also grew up in a fundamentalist Christian church before becoming a much happier, healthier atheist. So, I grew up reading Christian fiction, and certainly many classic novels are Christian.
How awful could it be to read books the library marks as "Inspirational"? Well, this book was not inspirational, but it was at least set in Colorado, in a small I read this book because it was on the shelf at the library, and I am reading all the books on that shelf at the library, as a reading challenge.
Well, this book was not inspirational, but it was at least set in Colorado, in a small foothills town near Boulder, so I enjoyed that aspect at least.
Even when I was a Christian, though, I preferred more of a C. Lewis style God, one who is not out to break people, so this novel, which specifically reiterates a prayer asking God to break people, really bugged me.
Had my church worshiped a God who was described like that I would have probably left the church even sooner than I did. So, I did not care for this novel's theology, and as it is a novel specifically styled as a Christian novel, that impacted my rating of it.
Ignoring the passages where theology is dominant, though, this book compares well enough to a decent Louis L'Amour novel. In this book a young woman, McKenna, and her brother Robert travel to Colorado to start over after escaping legal trouble in Missouri.
Their relatives in Colorado turn out to have had troubles of their own, however, and McKenna has to figure out how to make her new life work despite increasingly difficult challenges.
McKenna herself will appeal to modern women, as a woman who can take care of herself and who has marketable skills.
Actually in Colorado history at the time of the story, women had quite a lot more leeway to manage farms and do work otherwise limited to men, simply because the West was a rough place to live and everyone did what they had to to make things work.
So, I found the sexism of the town in this novel a bit overstated, but I'm sure many small towns did try to hang on to lifestyles and expectations from the eastern, 'civilized' states.
The story requires the sexism, in order to make the conclusion work, so I guess I'm not as annoyed with it as I otherwise might be.
The writing itself in this book is a bit insipid and overdone, erring towards telling instead of showing, and sapping whole chapters of their momentum as a result, but the story is enough of an action based Western that it never loses momentum entirely.
I suppose this could be considered a Western for Christian women who want a bit of theology with their saloon brawls and gunfights.
It was ok, and probably readers less used to reading Westerns, or more used to reading modern Christian genre fiction will like this book more than I did.
It could have been a lot more insipid, and at least I never felt I was being preached at, or that the theology was choking the story, problems I've seen in many novels I read in this genre back in my teens.
